AUBURN - Alfred A. "Fred" Potvin, 98, died August 28th in his home after an illness. He leaves his second wife of 16 years, Rita Baker Potvin, two children, Alfred Potvin and his wife Jan of New Hampshire and Claudette Desrosiers and her husband Roger of Millbury and two step children, Mary Adamski and James Baker and his wife, Marie, 2 grandchildren, Danielle and Michelle Desrosiers and her fiancé, Joe, and three step grandchildren, Lynn Pepin and Amy and Luke Baker, and one great-step-grandchild (Josy) and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was born in Websterville, VT, son of the late Thomas and Elida Potvin. He was predeceased by his brothers, Edmond, Edgar, Henry, Romeo, Lionel, Emile, Roland and two sisters, Yvonne Potvin and Marie Raymond. His first wife, Jackie died in 1992 after 52 years of marriage.
He graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre, VT and joined his brothers in Worcester in the 1930s. He was the manager of Worcester Chemical Distributors for nearly 40 years until his retirement in 1975. He resided in Worcester, Millbury, and Auburn.
He was a member of the North American Martyrs Church in Auburn. He will always be remembered as a deeply religious man, a great gardener, an unbelievable caretaker, and someone with an incredible sense of humor. Everyone who met Fred left with a lifetime friend.
His funeral will be held Friday, August 31st from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury with a Mass at 11 a.m. in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Dr. in Auburn. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 30th at the funeral home and burial will be private.
The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial donations can be made to the Auburn District Nursing Association, Inc., 191 Pakachoag St., Auburn, MA 01501 who helped Fred for over 12 years. Thanks to Visiting Angels for the past four years and for VNA Care Network & Hospice Inc. in his final month. We are especially thankful to his personal care assistants for the wonderful care they gave Fred, especially to Winnie who cared for him for four years and to Edith, his most recent PCA .
