MILLBURY Alphonse J. Matta, 88, of 123 Park Hill Ave., died peacefully Monday, April 2nd in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
His wife, of 63 years, Femmy E. (Kangas) Matta, died in 2003. He leaves two daughters, Diane L. wife of Peter Shemeth of Auburn and Caron J. wife of James Willand of Millbury; four grandchildren who knew him as "Papa", Lisa and her husband Anthony Rinaldo, Cindy and her husband Matt Belsito all of Millbury, Derek and his wife Randie Willand of Waterbury, VT and David and his wife Kerry Bedard of Hoboken, NJ.; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Josephine Gorczynski of Worcester, Majorie Prenda of Bristol, RI and Frances Zerella of Marlboro. He was born, August 27, 1918 in Medway and is predeceased by his parents, Egidio and Elizabeth (Eranio) Matta and a brother, Salvatore Matta. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade High School for Carpentry. He built his own home in Millbury 58 years ago, where he still lived.
He entered military service and became a U.S. Marine, serving with the 5th Battalion, platoon 375 during WW II. He was a bantam weight boxer and won many matches. He worked at the American Steel & Wire Company and won their contest in naming their newsletter "Yard Bugle". He was an iron worker and retired in 1984. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Olive Branch Lodge of Mason in Millbury and was also a member of the their Scottish Rite. He was an avid golfer and a founding member of Clearview Country Club in Millbury.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6th in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury. Burial will be in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p. m. Thursday, April 5th in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701.
