NORTHBRIDGE / MILLBURY - Barbara Ann (Johnson) Sullivan, 72, of Northbridge, formerly of Millbury, died peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2015, at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Ronald X. Sullivan; her daughter, Lisa Haggerty and her husband, Brian of Whitinsville; two sons, Cory Sullivan and his wife, Karyn of Northbridge and Gregg Sullivan and his wife, Kathleen of Auburn; a brother, Carl Johnson and his wife, Peggy of Shrewsbury, six grandchildren, James and Nicole Haggerty of Whitinsville, Kevin and Camryn Sullivan of Northbridge and Anne and Matthew Sullivan of Auburn. In addition, she leaves many other family members and extended family members who have been there through her courageous battle, always with words of encouragement and love.
Barbara was born in Worcester. Her parents were the late Jessie and George Johnson. She graduated from North High in 1961. She continued her education at Holy Ghost Hospital in Cambridge MA, earning her LPN and was awarded the Class Proficiency honor. In 1981, while working fulltime and raising her 3 children, she earned her BSN graduating from Quinsigamond Community College and Assumption College Summa Cum Laud.
Barbara's 44 year nursing career began in Worcester area hospitals, including Worcester City Hospital, Fairlawn Hospital and finally Saint Vincent Hospital. She was a dedicated and selfless nurse for 33 years at Saint Vincent where she also formed many long and lasting friendships.
Her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother. She was an expert in planning family vacations, including trips to Aruba and Walt Disney World. Creating life-long memories for her children and grandchildren was especially important to her.
Barbara's calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28th in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury. Her funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept 29th in St. Patrick's Church, 1 Cross St. Whitinsville. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Whitinsville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Vincent Cancer and Wellness Center, 1 Eaton Place, Worcester, MA 01608.
