Berton W. "Captain" "Bill" Childs, 87, died Saturday, Nov. 16th in his home surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Michelena (DiSilvestro) Childs; three sons, Michael Childs of Worcester, Berton Childs and his wife Cynthia of Easeley, SC and Richard Childs and his wife Catherine of Newport News, VA; one daughter, Cynthia Childs; two sisters: Barbara Tubbs and her husband Clarence of Florida and Virginia Liljestrand of Grafton; 4 grandchildren Carly, Ashley, Joseph and Melissa and one great grandson Jessiah; 3 step-grandchildren and 8 step great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was born in Worcester and is predeceased by his father, Frederick Childs and his birth mother, Florence (Morse) Childs, who died when he was one year old, and the mother that raised him Janet (Morrill) Childs. He is also predeceased by two brothers, Frederick Childs and Donald Childs and one sister, Florence Childs.
He worked as a master mechanic for 40 years at New England Electric Company. Upon retirement he could be found serving lunches at Stoney O'Briens where he ran the kitchen for 17 years. His cooking career actually started in the US Navy where he served two distinguished tours of duty spanning 10 years and both World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He always had a smile on his face and would ask you for the same in return. He was an avid bowler and golfer and always enjoyed arranging a road trip to the track.
The family would like to thank the Peritoneal and Hemodialysis Units at St. Vincent's Hospital for the wonderful care they have given him over the years.
Funeral services and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Mulhane Home for Funerals in Millbury is assisting the family with the arrangements.
