MILLBURY – Betty-Ann (Johnson) Hedlund, 67, passed away peacefully at Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester on Thursday, December 17, 2015. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Warren and Helen (Jakstas) Johnson.
Betty is survived by her husband of 46 years, Paul O. Hedlund; two daughters, Katherine M. Dedinas of Millbury and Kristina E. Davis and her husband Aaron of Dudley; four grandchildren, Alexander Paul, Benjamin Jonas, Madeline Rae, and Jack Kazimer; her mother, Helen M. Austin of Oxford; three sisters, Susan Varin and her husband, Edward, Penny Morway and her husband, Timothy, and Lisa Morton and her husband, Robert, all from Sutton; a sister in-law, Elaine M. Steinhilber of Niantic, CT; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was born in Worcester and grew up on Vernon Hill. She graduated from South High School and then Fitchburg State College as a registered nurse. She later attended Anna Maria College earning a Master's Degree in Education. She worked as a school nurse for 10 years and then taught first grade for another 17 years in Millbury until retiring in 2014. Betty was a loving wife and mother and a caring grandmother. She was an avid reader and enjoyed beachcombing for shells and sea glass along the coasts and beaches of Massachusetts and Maine.
Burial and a private family graveside funeral service was held at the All Faiths (Swedish Cemetery) in Worcester. Per her own request there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Millbury Public Library, Elm St., Millbury, MA 01527. Mulhane Home for Funerals in Millbury is assisting the family with the arrangements.
