SUTTON - Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (Benjamin) LeClaire, 75, of Sutton, died Thursday, June 8th.
She leaves her husband of 50 years, Robert L. LeClaire; three sons, John R. LeClaire and his wife Ruth A. Hodges of Lincoln, MA, Stephen E. LeClaire and his wife Joy M. LeClaire of Sutton, and James L. LeClaire and his wife Ruby LeClaire, also of Sutton. She also leaves four grandchildren, Lauren and Benjamin LeClaire of Sutton, and Evan and Adam Hodges-LeClaire of Lincoln.
Born in Worcester, June 25th 1930, Betty was the only child of the late Stephen Edgar and Mary G. (Stevenson) Benjamin. She was raised in Sutton at Singletary Farm and attended Sutton schools, before graduating from South High School in Worcester. She later graduated from Salter Secretarial School in Worcester. She lived in and loved Sutton for all of her life.
Betty owned and operated Stephen Benjamin Insurance Agency, taking over her fatherTM)s business at age 20 upon his death in 1950. She later owned and operated the business with her husband, until her retirement in 1992.
She was a former member of the Worcester Board of Insurance Underwriters, Worcester Soroptimists Club, Sutton School Committee, Sutton Town Hall Building Committee, and a Cub Scout den mother for Pack 143 in Sutton. She proudly held the position of Secretary for SuttonTM)s 250th anniversary in 1954, as well as its 300th anniversary in 2004. She was the only Suttonian to serve on both committees. Her family and many friends will remember her as a gracious hostess, fun traveling companion, savvy and honest businesswoman, good neighbor, doting daughter, loving wife, mother and grandmother and family matriarch. Her character, sense of humor, faith, strength of conviction, and positive attitude guided her life and continues on in many lives she touched. She loved life, people, home and family, put the needs of others first and enjoyed the love and respect of her family and town.
Her calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 11th at Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury. Her funeral will be held from the funeral home on Monday June 12th with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. MarkTM)s Catholic Church, 356 Boston Rd., Sutton, next door to her home. Burial will follow in Old Howard Cemetery, Armsby Rd., Sutton, with her parents, her beloved cousin Pat Hyland and many Sutton friends and neighbors.
