Charles E. Thornburg, 97, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 22nd of natural causes, surrounded by his loving family.
Charlie's wife, Louise W. (Matson) Thornburg passed away in 2010. He leaves four children, Barbara H. Burmer and her husband, Danny of Millbury, Carl E. Thornburg and his wife, Elaine of West Brookfield, Russell M. Thornburg and his wife, Holly of Millbury and Roger L. Thornburg and his wife, Doreen of Millbury; three grandchildren, Robert, Rebecca and Robyn; nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his parents, Rev. Mont and Bertha (Swartz) Thornburg, a brother, Calvin Thornburg and a sister, Helen Jones.
Charlie was a retired United States Naval Aviator and served as a Lieutenant during World War II. He flew torpedo bombers off air craft carriers during the war. Charlie graduated from Boston University with a bachelor's degree and worked as a sales manager for Millbury Ford Mercury for over 30 years. He was an active member of the Millbury Federated Church and the Ramshorn Pond Association. Charlie was an avid Millbury Men's Softball, Boston Red Sox and Patriots fan. He enjoyed participating in his children's sports as an assistant coach and score keeper.
Charlie's calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 26th from 4 to 7 p.m. in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main Street in Millbury. A funeral service will follow the calling hours at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Millbury Federated Church, 20 Main St. Millbury, MA 01527.
