Delbert S. Smith, 83, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 in his home, surrounded by his family, after a battle with cancer.
He leaves his wife of 64 years, Eleanor M. (Kacerik) Smith; seven children, James Smith and his wife, Ann of Belfast, NY, Donna McCarthy and her husband, Michael of Millbury, Charlene Mendoza of Worcester, Richard Smith of Shrewsbury, Aileen Lovejoy of Shrewsbury; Andrew Smith and his wife, Lisa of Sparta, NY, David Smith and his wife, Kathryn of Worcester; 19 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Pennsylvania and is predeceased by his parents, Emery and Helen (Kresge) Smith; 8 siblings; a grandson and a great grandson.
Delbert served his country in the US Army as a military police officer (a guard to General MacArthur). After being discharged he worked for Salems Fruit Company in Webster for 15 years and then for the State Department of Mental Health for 20 years, then he became a private contractor for 15 years, before he retired. After his retirement he worked for Wallmart in maintenance and retired at 80 years old, for medical reasons.
He was a loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and was an incredible friend to all. He was a Mason with the Olive Branch Lodge of Masons in Millbury for 35 years and a member of the Bethlehem Covenant Church in Worcester. His family would like to thank UMASS Memorial Hospital Oncology Dept. at the University Campus, the VNA Hospice Care and Dr. Candib at the Family Health Center for all their compassion and care.
His funeral service will be held a 10 a.m. Thursday June 6th in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 5th in the funeral home. Masons will conduct their ritual at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
