Donald G. Gover, 86, passed away peacefully at the Rose Monahan Hospice House on January 3, 2014, surrounded by his family, after a long illness.
Born in Millbury, the son of Exlaw and Anna (White) Gover he attended Millbury Schools and was awarded a diploma from Millbury High School in 2000 as part of "Operation Recognition" along with other veterans who left school during World War II. Don served as a US Navy Seabee on Okinawa during World War II and is a life member of the Charles F. Minney Post VFW #3329 and the Devoe-Taylor American Legion Post #9 both in Millbury. Following the war he founded Gover Brothers Construction with his brother and continued as a business partner with his son Gary. He was most proud of the home he built for his family. Don joined the Millbury Call Fire Department in April 1954. He was a founding member and Captain of Engine Five, serving on the Board of Engineers, as Assistant Chief, and eventually being elected Chief. He attended and never missed the yearly Millbury Old Timers Banquets. He enjoyed summers at his cottage on South Charlton Reservoir.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Julia "Blondie" (Symonaick) Gover, his son, Gordon D. Gover and his wife Nancy of Bridgewater, NJ, his daughter, Donna R. Nagelschmidt and her husband John, his son, Gary D. Gover and his partner Cookie Aubin, and his daughter, Darlene J. Burdzel and her husband, William all of Millbury. He also leaves 8 grandchildren, Mary, Claire and Rose Nagelschmidt, Michael and Sarah Gover, and Katie, Adam, and Nathan Burdzel, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Vera Scott, Mary "Belle" Provencher, and his brothers Bernard and Russell.
His funeral will be held Friday, Jan 10th from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St. in Worcester.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9th in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in Central Cemetery in Millbury.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Millbury Fire Fighters Relief Association, 126 Elm St. Millbury, MA 01527.
