MILLBURY - Donald I. Stowe, 87, of Colonial Drive, Millbury, died November 25, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. He was born June 16, 1922 in Millbury the son of Irving L. and Lottie J. (Houghton) Stowe. He lived in Millbury most of his life.
Donald served in the Army Air Corp. during WWII as an top turret gunner on a B-17 in the 463rd Bomber Squadron stationed in Foggia, Italy where he successfully completed 50 bombing missions. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic efforts in helping to keep his plane airborne after it was hit with over 300 shots of shrapnel on a bombing mission over Yugoslavia. The plane was able to safely land and all on board survived.
Donald worked for various surveying companies throughout New England and New York State during his career. He spent many years surveying with his brother, Richard, in Ludlow. He at one time worked for Electric Boat in Groton, CT.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy J. wife of Timothy J. Wilder of Worcester, his son, Donald L. Stowe, and his wife Cheryl, of Norcross, GA.; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn S., wife of Daniel D. Licht, Daniel R. Wilder and David J. Stowe. He is also survived by his brother David B. Stowe and his wife Florence of Shrewsbury along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Richard H. and Robert W. Stowe and cousins Helen Purdie, Carolyn Eaton, George B. and Arthur L. Stowe.
Donald was a member of the First Congregational Church of Millbury and the 463rd Bomb Group Historical Society. His greatest joy in life was driving daily to visit his many relatives and friends in the area. He loved a good conversation and was always up on current events and enjoyed sharing stories of his time in the service. The family wishes to thank all those who were able to go visit Donald during these last weeks when he was unable to get around to visit them.
His Memorial Service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3rd in the First Congregational Church, 148 West Main St. in Millbury. Burial will be private in West Millbury Cemetery in Millbury. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 0170.Mulhane Home for Funerals in Millbury is assisting the family with the arrangements.
