PORTLAND, Oregon—Doris (Daley) Carey, 92, devoted to family and known for her keen sense of humor, passed away peacefully on Nov. 14, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.
Born July 12, 1925, Doris grew up in Millbury, MA. She lived in Wellesley, MA for more than 40 years. She retired to Bluffton, SC at the young age of 79, where she built a home close to her daughter Linda. She spent the last seven years in Portland, OR where she lived down the street from her daughter Susan, and recently Linda and her husband Joe.
A graduate of Millbury High School, Doris went on to marry Robert Carey in 1958. Doris considered her greatest accomplishment in life with her husband to be the raising of—and devotion to—the couple’s two daughters.
After raising her daughters, she returned to work and became the manager of student accounts at Wellesley College. She loved helping and interacting with students and their parents. She retired in 1987, so she and her husband could travel.
Doris had a talent for needlepoint and crocheting, and many of her creations could be found in her home or those of her daughters. She enjoyed gardening no matter where she lived.
Doris was kind and good-hearted and had a long history of coming to the assistance of those in need of a caring friend. Her home became a home to several friends in need.
Ten years ago she suffered a stroke, and while she experienced limitations, her strength of spirit and perseverance allowed her to live a full life, in part due to the loving support of her family. She inspired and was loved by so many people. She was a bright light who will be missed.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, William and Lena Daley; a brother, Raymond Daley; her sisters, Mary Daley and Bernice (Daley) Kenary; her nephew, Richard Carey; and daughter-in-law, Amanda Rotton. She leaves her daughters, Susan Carey and Linda Larkin, and Linda’s husband, Joseph Larkin, all of Portland. She also leaves her two godsons John Kenary and John Carey; her nieces Maura (Kenary) Barbado, Janet (Kenary) Dumas, and Maureen Carey; her nephew Richard Kenary, and their families.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 16th at 10 a.m. at St. Brigid Church, 59 N. Main Street in Millbury. She will be laid to rest in St. Brigid Cemetery in Millbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
