Dorothy Platts

MILLBURY – Dorothy Louise Platts, 97, died Saturday, Oct 12th in the Millbury Health Care Center, surrounded by her family and friends.

Dorothy graduated from Millbury High School in 1934 and then worked at Buck Brothers until her retirement in 1978. Dot enjoyed sports, playing basketball, softball, golf, bowling and cross country skiing. In 1941 Dot was Captain of the Haywood-Schuster Girls Softball team. In their first years of play at Merrill Usher Park in Worcester, the state championship was lost in front of three thousand fans. In September of that same year the team also known as the Driscollites, played an All-Star team from the Parks Recreation League to benefit the British War Relief Fund. In 1942, again as Captain the Haywood-Schuster team represented the Massachusetts in the North Atlantic Regionals. They won becoming the first team from Massachusetts to win that title. Dot enjoyed vacationing at Cap Cod, Florida, New Hampshire, Maine, card playing and trips to "gamble land". When asked about the secret to a long life she would reply, "I lived the life I loved and I loved the life I lived".

She leaves many close friends, nieces and nephews, who will miss her dearly. She was born in Millbury and is predeceased by her parents, George and Rose Ann (Scott) Platts, three sisters, Rose Annie, Priscilla and Alice, seven brothers, Jack, Jim, Harry "Sonny", George "Gus", Alfred "Anger", Herbert "Tuba" and Earnest "Pat".

Dorothy's calling hours are Monday, Oct. 14th from 5 to 7 p.m. in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury. Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 15th at 11 a.m. in The Millbury Federated Church, 20 Main St. in Millbury. Burial will be in Central Cemetery in Millbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Activity Fund of the Millbury Health Care Center, 312 Millbury Ave., Millbury, MA 01527.
