Edward A. Domey, 78, died Monday, January 7, 2013 in his home.
Ed is predeceased by his wife, Anne in 2000. He is survived by three children, Paul Domey with whom he lived, Barbara Heller and her husband Jack in Texas and Janice Walckner and her husband Jim in Shrewsbury. He leaves four grandchildren Chris Domey, Ben Domey, Andrew Sickenberger and Danny Heller and one great grandson Carson Domey. He also leaves behind a brother Bob Domey and many nieces and nephews.
Ed graduated from South High School in 1953 and East Coast Arrow Tech in 1955. Ed built his home in Sutton and lived there for more than 50 years. He was the former chairman of both the Central Mass Regional Planning Board and the Sutton Planning Board where he served for 15 years. Ed was a charter member of St. Marks Church in Sutton.
He was the owner of Heritage Recreation Center from 1973 to 1983, the first indoor horseshoe pitching facility established in the country. Ed was an avid horseshoe pitcher. He won four Massachusetts state championships and the New England championship in 1975. In both 1975 and 1976 he was the 13th best horseshoe pitcher in the world.
In 1987, Ed was inducted into the New England Horseshoe pitching hall of fame. In 1987 he was inducted into the National Horseshoe pitching hall of fame as both a player and an organizer. He was also the recipient of the Arch Stokes award in 1994 for the person who contributed the most to the advancement of the sport.
Ed was a fifty year member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, New England Horseshoe Pitchers Association and the Massachusetts Horseshoe Pitchers Association. He established the National Game Related Sales and headed this up for 20 years.
Ed founded Domey Construction in 1957 and in 1973 opened Heritage Pools. The business went on to be a leader in the industry for its knowledge and quality construction.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Blackstone Valley Home Care that helped to make it possible for Ed to stay at home for seven years following his stroke especially Angela, Godfred, Rod, Rhoda, Patty, Lisa and Kelly who were so kind and caring. They would also like to thank the staff at Summit Eldercare for giving Ed a place to go and share his wit and humor.
Ed's funeral will be held on Thursday, January 10th from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main Street in Millbury, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mark's Church, 356 Boston Road in Sutton. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery in Sutton. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 9th from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
