SUTTON - Ellery B. 'Bucky' Smith, 95, of 337 Boston Road, died Friday, July 13, in his home after an illness.
His wife of 62 years, Faith A. (Freeland) Smith, died in 1992. He leaves three sons, Stephen H. Smith of New Lebanon, N.Y., Raymond E. Smith and Andrew F. Smith both of Sutton; a daughter, Hope E. Stockhaus of Sutton; thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by a son, Harold F. Smith of Camden Maine and six brothers, Fred H. Smith, Walter A. Smith, Channing W. Smith, Wilder S. Smith, Daniel S. Smith and James A. Smith and three sisters, Marian T. Smith, Flora L. Smith and Jane H. Smith. He was born in Sutton, son of Fred S. and J. Tyla ((Holbrook) Smith and has lived here all of his life. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1924.
Mr. Smith was a superintendent of the former Leland & Gifford Company of Worcester where he started as an apprentice after high school and worked 46 years, retiring in 1970. He was an active firefighter in Sutton for over 50 years. He was Deputy Chief of Company #1 from 1944 to 1970 and then Sutton Fire Chief from 1970 to 1988 when he retired. He played trumpet in a musical group for many years with his brothers.
He was the oldest member of the First Congregational Church, where he was an active member for 81 years and also sang in the church choir. He was an election worker and Warden of Precinct 1 until he was 91, He was also a member and past master of the Sutton Grange, a charter member of the Sutton MenTM)s Club and a member of its bowling team where he continued bowling until he was over 90. He was also a member of the Blackstone Valley Forestry Association, the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts, and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Masons in Oxford. He played baseball in the former Blackstone Valley League and was an avid cribbage player.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, in the First Congregational Church, 312 Boston Road, on the Common. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 16, in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ellery B. and Faith F.
