Eugenia M. Smith (Lach) 94, peacefully passed away on October 19, 2015.
She was the wife of the late Emil B. Smith who predeceased her in 1996. Born and raised in Winchendon, Massachusetts, she was daughter of Andrew Lasch and Mary (Stys) Lasch. Her brother Edward Lach of Malden and her sisters Antoinette Splitz of Malden and Helen Lach of Potok, Poland all predeceased her.
She graduated from Murdock High School and Saint Vincent School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. Her early nursing career included working as a staff nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. While working at the hospital she cared for many of the injured during the tragic Coconut Grove Fire. After marrying Emil she moved to Worcester and then to Sutton. Eugenia worked for many years at St. Vincent's Hospital specializing in private duty nursing. She ended her nursing career retiring from Worcester State Hospital. She was a member of the original Nurses' Health Study by Harvard Medical School and Dr. Frank Speizer.
Eugenia loved to travel and was an avid gardener and shopper, especially for her grandchildren. She enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Patriots, going to the casinos and took pride in exquisitely decorating her home for the various holidays. In her free time, she was an active participant at St. Mark's Church, in the Red Hat Society, as well as the Sutton Senior Center where she was President for many years.
She is survived by her sons, Richard M. and his wife Anne M. of South Kingstown, RI; Kenneth R. and his wife Deborah M. of Sutton, MA; her daughters, Penelope S. and her husband Robert Nunnemacher of Sutton MA and Bonnie L. and her husband Richard J. Fecowicz of Peterborough, NH. Eugenia had 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements for Eugenia will be private at the Mulhane Home for Funerals in Millbury at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at the West Sutton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Friends of Sutton Elders 19 Hough Road, Sutton, MA or to the American Alzheimer's Association.
