GRAFTON / MILLBURY- Frederick "Pete" Gonya, 77, of Grafton, formerly of Millbury died Monday, April 29, 2013 in his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a courage battle with lung cancer for two and one half years.
Pete was born in Worcester, MA on November 27, 1935, the eighth child of the late Harold and Estelle Marengo Gonya. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie Gonya; a daughter Laurie Atchue and her husband Timothy, of Worcester; a son Daniel Gonya and his wife Kelly, of Sturbridge; three grandchildren, Kathryn Maloney and her husband Timothy, Erin Dore and her husband, Bryan, and Jonathan Atchue, all of Worcester, and a great-grandson Brendan Maloney, who was the apple of his eye. He also leaves his only surviving sibling, Ann Stevenson of Longville, MN, and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents; brothers, Robert and Neil Gonya, and sisters Janice Kenny, Deany O'Brien, Norma Smith and Beverly Sousa.
Peter was a navy veteran of the Korean War. He worked as a news distributor for the Telegram and Gazette for 35 years, retiring in 1997. He was a past member of the Masons, the Lions Club, and Rotary International. He was a member of the Finance Committee of Millbury, Chairman of the United Way, and one of the original members of Dollars for Scholars in Millbury. He coached Little League Farm Baseball and was a Webelos leader for Troop 109 in Millbury. Pete played a mean game of golf, loved to travel and spent many waking hours in his woodworking shop. His favorite times were spent with his family and dear friends, particularly his Dinner Club friends and his golfing buddies. Pete was an active member of Millbury Federated Church for many years and a Stephen Minister. He faithfully attended the Thursday Morning Men's Prayer Group. He was a disciple for his Lord and Savior and shared that love with all the lives he touched.
His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4th in the Millbury Federated Church, 20 Main St. in Millbury. Burial will be in Central Cemetery in Millbury. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 3rd in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Millbury Federated Church, Food Pantry, 20 Main St. Millbury, MA 01527 or to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O.
