MILLBURY Harold F. "Ozzie" Ostrowski, 84, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 after a short illness. His wife of 54 years, Irene (Balukonis) Ostrowski, died in June. He has lived in Millbury since 1960.
He leaves a daughter, Joyce Ostrowski, wife of Harold Sampson and one grandson, Alex Sampson all of Millbury and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Webster and is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Elizabeth (Stanislawski) Ostrowski, two sons, James who died in 1961 and Jeff who died in 1980; three sisters, Anna Plante, Harriet Boginis and Alice Higgins, and two brothers, Edward Ostrowski and Dr. Francis Ostrowski.
Harold was a graduate of Bartlett High School in Webster, Worcester Junior College and Fitchburg State College. He was a drafting instructor at the Hubert H. Humphrey Occupational Resource Center in Boston and the former Boston Trade High School in Roxbury, retiring in 1988. He was an assistant at Mulhane Home for Funerals for 25 years. He was a Navy veteran who served during WW II.
Mr. Ostrowski served the Town of Millbury for 46 years beginning in 1965 with a 5 year term on the Finance Committee as a member and as Chairman, and was the Chairman of the Council on Aging at the time of his death. He was a former board member of the Millbury Society of District Nursing. He was a Selectman for 13 years from 1970 to 1983, including serving as Chairman, and was a Life member of the MA SelectmenTM)s Association. He was a former member of the Municipal Swimming Pool Committee, the Rescue Truck Committee, the Fire Department Study Committee, and the Town Manager Screening Committee, and served on the Board of Registrars from 1983-1986. Mr. Ostrowski was elected to the Millbury Board of Assessors and served from 1986-1994. He also served as Co-Chairman of the Worcester County Assessors Association Education Committee. He was a member of the Millbury Charter Commission in 1989-90 and also in 1999-2000. He was chairman of both the Water Study Committee and the Millbury Fiscal Responsibility Committee.
Harold was a member and Past President and Past Executive Director of the Worcester Area Association for Retarded Children. He was a member of the Polish National Alliance, the Knights of Lithuania Council 116, the Devoe-Taylor American Legion Post #9, Opera Worcester, Friends of the Millbury Seniors, the American Vocational Association, and the MA Vocational Association. He was a life member of the Millbury Historical Society and a former member of the Webster Lodge of Elks. He was a former member and lector at Our Lady of Vilna Church in Worcester for many years and then a member of St. Brigid Parish in Millbury.
In 2004 he received the Judith P. Wilkinson Humanitarian Award presented by the Millbury Democratic Town Committee. He served as MillburyTM)s representative on the Central Mass. Resource Recovery Committee and served as Vice Chairman. He was also appointed to MillburyTM)s Solid Waste Management Task Force in 2005. Mr. Ostrowski was instrumental in locating the Wheelabrator facility in Millbury. He was appointed by former Governor King to the Mass. Advisory Committee on Vocational Education in 1981.
Mr. Ostrowski was a charter member and Past President of the Millbury Lions Club and had served on the Board of Directors. In 1988 he received the Melvin Jones Humanitarian Award, the highest award given by Lions International. He was named MillburyTM)s Lion of the Year in 1995 and was also the first Millbury Lion to become a Life member of Lions Club International. He also received the Joseph J. Camarda Fellowship Award in 2002 and the Humanitarian Award from the Millbury Lioness Club in 2003.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, Oct. 5th, the Feast Day of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Brigid Church, 59 Main St in Millbury. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in Worcester. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4th in the funeral home. The Millbury Lions Club will conduct a prayer service at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday night, at the calling hours.
