BREA, CA – Beloved sister, aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt, Helga Harriet (Jacobson) Garvey, of Brea, CA, died on March 11, 2009 at the age of 100. Helga was born in New York City on November 1, 1908, daughter of Alfred and Ruth (Albin) Jacobson. She was formerly a resident of Millbury, MA until 1966 when she moved to Boynton Beach, FL.
Helga's husband, Gerald D. Garvey, predeceased her in 1958. She leaves one sister, Anne Godbout, of Brea, CA and several nieces and a nephew. Helga had two brothers, Eric Jacobson and Arthur Jacobson, and one sister, Ruth Florence Greenwood, that predeceased her.
Helga was an outstanding women's track and field athlete at Millbury High School. She placed second in the 1928 women's Olympic trials in the high jump and so missed going to the Olympics by one place.
Helga was a veteran of World War 2 where she served in the US Navy WAVES as a radioman first class in Jacksonville, FL. She was one of the first volunteers for the WAVES in 1942 when the organization was formed.
Helga worked as an executive secretary for many years at the O.S. Walker Co., Worcester and the W.W. Windle Co., Millbury, MA. At the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL. she was the executive assistant to the dean of the music department before retirement. She was a long time member of the choir at the Delray Beach, FL Methodist Church as well as a 75 year member of the Millbury Order of the Eastern Star and the First Congregational Church.
A private graveside service will be held in Central Cemetery in Millbury.
