MILLBURY – Howard S. Cummings, 88, of West Main St., died Tuesday, September 30th in the Life Care Center of Auburn.
His wife, Luella M. (Paine) Cummings died in 1989. He leaves a son, Bradley S. Cummings and his wife Marcia of North Brookfield; two daughters, Sandra J. Johnson of Pomfret, CT and Cynthia J. Bradway and her long time companion, Robert Quill of Millbury; seven grandchildren, Tara Shea, Vanessa Hill, Sarah and Amanda Bradway, Ashley Ottman, Gavin and Emma Cummings; seven great-grandchildren, Brett, Ryen and Summer Shea, Seth Bradway, Hector Diaz, Rafael and Isreal Cruz; a brother, Archie Cummings of Webster; two sisters, Hester Morin of Putnam, CT and Winona Tibbetts of East Templeton; nephews and nieces and a long time companion, Lydia Anderson. He is predeceased by his parents, Sherman and Blanche (Newell) Cummings and a son, Alan H. Cummings.
Mr. Cummings was a Supervisor of the Forge Shop at Buck Brothers in Millbury, before he retired. He then worked at Ray's True Value in Millbury for 20 years. He was an Army veteran during WW II serving with the 197th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. He drove a half-track that contained radio equipment during the invasion of Normandy and also participated in the Northern France, Ardenes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member and past Priest, of the Olive Branch Lodge of Masons, a long time Shriner and a clown with the Alethea Grotto and a member of the Charles F. Minney VFW Post both in Millbury. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Millbury
His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3rd in the First Congregational Church, 148 West Main St. in Millbury. Burial will be in the West Millbury Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2nd in Mulhane Home for Funeral, 45 Main St. in Millbury. The Masons will conduct their ritual at 7:30 p.m. and the Charles F. Minney Post will conduct their ritual at 7:15 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
