MILLBURY – Irene B. (Balukonis) Ostrowski, 83, died Friday, June 3rd at home, surrounded by her family.
Irene leaves her husband, Harold F. Ostrowski; a daughter, Joyce A. Ostrowski and her husband, Harry Sampson and their son, Alex Sampson all of Millbury; a sister, Mary B. Mrozinski and her husband Victor of Millbury; several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two sons, James Ostrowski who died in 1961 and Jeffrey Ostrowski who died in 1980; a brother, Joseph Balukonis and three sisters, Antoinette Stefanski, Aldona Lozoraitis and Isabel M. Stankus. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Lawrence J. and Teresa (Jakubavich) Balukonis and has lived in Millbury since 1960.
Irene graduated from the former Commerce High School in 1945. Mrs. Ostrowski was a Senior Clerk at Worcester Registry of Probate from 1945 to 1957. Irene was a charter member of the Millbury Lioness Club and in 1989 received the first Lioness of the Year Award. In 1993 she received the Melvin Jones Humanitarian Award, the highest award given by Lions International, in 1995 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2004 she received the Joseph J. Camarda Fellowship Award. Mrs. Ostrowski was a member of the Millbury Women's Club, Knights of Lithuania Council 116, the former Worcester Area Association for Retarded Children, Opera Worcester, the Friends of the Millbury Seniors, a life member of the Millbury Historical Society and a former member of Our Lady of Vilna Church in Worcester.
Mrs. Ostrowski's funeral will be held Wednesday, June 8th from the Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury, with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Brigid Church, 59 Main St., in Millbury. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in Worcester. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 7th in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jeffrey Ostrowski Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the Millbury Savings Bank, 109 Elm St., Millbury, MA 01527 or to the Friends of the Millbury Seniors, 1 River St., Millbury, MA, 01527.
