John Dexter "Deck" Brigham Jr., 90, pass peacefully Friday, May 16th surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves his wife, Carolyn M. (Carlson) Brigham; a son, Mark D. Brigham and his wife, Audrey of Sutton; a daughter, Bonnie M. Ryan and her husband, John of Pomfret, CT; three grandchildren, Justin T. Brigham, Megan W. Rand and Melissa J. B. Hatt; five great granddaughters, Abigail, Catherine, Elizabeth, Lola and Sophie; two brothers, Robert Brigham of Dennis and James Brigham of Sutton; a sister, Joan Hirsch of Pensacola, FL. He was born in Sutton and is predeceased by his parents, John D. Brigham Sr. and Grace (MacLaren) Brigham and a brother, Donald Brigham.
Dexter lived in Sutton throughout his life helping with the family Calmer Farm through high school and then enlisted in the US Navy in 1942, serving in the Pacific on the USS Belleau Wood throughout WWII. He then returned to Sutton and married Carolyn in 1949 and began working at Fred G. Walters Co. which he later owned and operated as Walters and Brigham TV until his retirement in 1991. Dexter served the town of Sutton in the Assessor's office in the 1950's, the Finance Board in the 1960's, was a Deacon of the First Congregational Church of Sutton for many years, was a Kiwanis member, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rites and served on a variety of other town and church groups.
Dexter was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend - of which he had many. He gave his all to everyone all the time and was kind and generous and loved by all who knew him. He will be sadly missed by everyone.
His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20th in the First Congregational Church, 307 Boston Rd. on the common, in Sutton. There are no calling hours. Mulhane Home for Funerals in Millbury is assisting the family with the arrangements. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery in Sutton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Congregational Church, 307 Boston Rd., Sutton, MA 01590.
