John S. Donnelly, Jr., 85, died Tuesday, April 21st in UMASS Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, surrounded by his loving family.
John leaves his wife of 60 years, Irene G. (Mongeon) Donnelly; four children, John S. Donnelly, III and his partner, Ben Grehan of Florida, Donna M. Flaminio and her husband, Frank of Worcester, Kathleen A. McCauliffe and her husband, Sean of Maryland and Thomas P. Donnelly and his wife, Katherine of Millbury; seven grandchildren, Frank, Kevin, Erin, Ashley, Anna, John and Emily; two brothers, Thomas and Taylor Donnelly; two sisters, Elizabeth McCarville and Margaret Desrosiers; many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret Donnelly.
John was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War. He was a civil engineer for the Mass Department of Public Works for 43 years retiring in 1997. In 1972 he was elected to the Millbury Board of Selectmen, serving eleven consecutive years as its chairman. John was retired from the Millbury Fire Department and served on its board of engineers. He was a coach for Millbury Little League and referee and coach for Millbury Pee Wee Basketball. John was long time member of Whitinsville Country Club and served many years on the board of governors as its treasurer. He was a member of the Millbury Old Timers for many years. John received the Third Annual Leo P. Bachant Democrat of the Year Award in 1991. He was also a member of the Charles F. Minney VFW Post and Vernon Hill American Legion. John was a long time parishioner of St. Brigid Church in Millbury.
John's calling hours will be held on Friday, April 24th from 5 to 8 p.m. in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main Street in Millbury.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 25th with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Brigid Church, 59 Main Street in Millbury. Burial will follow in St. Brigid Cemetery in Millbury.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Millbury Fire Fighters Relief Association, 127 Elm Street, Millbury, MA 01527.
