John Peterson

August 17, 1934 — April 7, 2011

SUTTON – John W. Peterson, 76, died Thursday, April 7th at the Life Care Center of Auburn. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

John leaves his wife of 50 years, Mary Lou (Hanson) Peterson; two daughters, Kathy L. Eaton and her husband, Donald of PA, Linda P. Jernberg and her husband, Terry of Sutton, and one son, John W. Peterson and his wife, Kristy of East Brookfield; eleven grandchildren, Thomas, Laurel, Wendi-Jo, Gary, Colby and Seth Eaton, Daniel, Cory, and Kristen Jernberg, and Jacob and Jared Peterson, as well as a great granddaughter, Paige Eaton; a sister, Lillian Peterson of Sutton; nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester and is predeceased by his parents, John B.R. and Almeda E. (Skogsberg) Peterson, a daughter, Joyce Peterson and two sisters, Eleanor Dahlin and Shirley Delude.

John joined the Sutton Fire Department in 1950 at the age of 16. Second only to family, the department was his greatest source of pride and honor. He served on the fire department for a total of 49 years, 11 of which as Fire Chief, before retiring in 1999. John was also a foreman at Norton Company in Worcester where he worked for over 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was a US Army veteran and served two years in Germany and was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Olive Branch Lodge. In the rare time he spent relaxing, he enjoyed boating on Lake Singletary and spending time with family at their summer home on Cape Cod.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 11th in the First Congregational Church, 307 Boston Rd., on the common in Sutton. Calling hours are 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 10th in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury. A Masonic service will be performed by the Olive Branch Lodge at 6 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in West Sutton Cemetery in Sutton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sutton Fire Department - Special Gifts Account, 4 Uxbridge Rd., Sutton, MA 01590 or the Memorial Fund of the First Congregational Church, 307 Boston Rd., Sutton, MA 01590.
