John Reed

SUTTON - John G. Reed, 86, of Sutton, died Monday, March 13th in his home after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 18 years, Evelyn M. (Anderson) Magnuson Reed; a son David F. Reed of Brimfield; a step-son Craig L. and his wife Lise Magnuson of Millbury; a step-daughter Janet wife of Thomas J. Clawson of Millbury; a daughter-in-law Carol Reed of Hardwick; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildrenand a special friend, Larry Morris of Sutton . Mr. Reed is predeceased by his parents Frank and Bessie (Griswold) Reed, his first wife, Ethyl Reed, a son Peter Reed, and two sisters Helen and Marion Reed. Mr. Reed graduated from Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport CT and then from Bridgeport Engineering College.

Mr. Reed was a former engineer at Singer Mfg. Co., General Electric and Brown & Sharp Co. He was C.E.O at Homelite Chain Saw, a division of Textron in Greer and Gastonia, S. Carolina. He previously was President of Whitin Machine in Whitinsville, owner and president of Lawson Mfg. in Peabody and owner and president of Buel Machine in Woburn. John was a 1st Lieutenant with the Air Force Flying Tigers, which ultimately became the 14th Air Force. He flew 45 missions over Japan and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Oak Leaf Cluster.

He was a member of LionTM)s Clubs for 40 years and most recently the Sutton Lions Club and received the LionTM)s International Foundation Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services. Mr. Reed was also a member of the Worcester Historical Society, a member of the Board of Directors of the Sutton Council of Aging and Tri Valley Elder Services, a member of the Sutton Housing Authority, the 300th Celebration Committee of Sutton, Sutton Historical Society and the Dudley-Gendron American Legion Post 414. He was a former Selectmen in Sutton and former President of the Massachusetts Christmas Tree Association. He was also very active in the Whitinsville United Methodist Church as a Sunday School Teacher, a trustee and a member of the churchTM)s Finance Committee.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 16th in the United Methodist Church, 61 Linwood Ave., Northbridge. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery, Sutton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday March 15th in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, 61 Linwood Ave., Northbridge, MA 01588 or to the Bethlehem Covenant Church, 46 Greenwood St. Worcester, MA 01607 or to the Auburn District Nursing Association 191 Pakachoag Street Auburn, MA 01501.
