MILLBURY – John J. Wackell died June 18, 2014, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's.
John is survived by his wife, Joan A. (Berard) Wackell. He also leaves his loving family, Robin M. Pond and her husband, Robert Pond, of Webster, Michael J. Wackell, Sr. and his wife, Diane M. Wackell, of Millbury, Paul F. Wackell of Worcester, and Scott A. Wackell of Webster. He also leaves his grandchildren, Alicia T. Wackell, Michael J. Wackell, Jr. and his wife Lauren A. Wackell, Maegan E. Wackell and significant other David Jordan, and Sophia R. Wackell. Additionally, he leaves 3 great grandchildren Michael, Zachary and Khloe Mazzilli, and a close cousin Peter Stanley of Oxford. An only son, John was predeceased by his parents John Sr. and Pauline Wackell. He will be tenderly remembered and greatly missed.
During his lifetime John was an artist and framer, consultant, construction project manager, and builder. Always artistic, John turned to art following his retirement and opened a gallery and frame shop in his Millbury home. He developed a unique style of striking and precise pen and ink line drawings. His work was exhibited on Cape Cod and locally. He framed art for several local commercial projects as well as for individual clients. John also owned J.J. Wackell, Consultant and worked with architectural firms including Dixon Salo of Worcester, MA. John provided project management expertise for multiple large construction projects including senior high-rise buildings, a college in Springfield, the Massachusetts prison system, and several large building projects in the Boston area.
John was a graduate of Worcester Junior College, Worcester Boys Trade and was especially proud of having graduated from Classical High School which was then rated among the best high schools in Massachusetts. John was a Staff Sergeant with the Massachusetts Air National Guard – 101st Aircraft Control & Warning Flight, and was called up to serve in Germany during the Cold War from 1961 to 1962.
John's family extends thanks to the staff at Millbury Health Care Center and Compassionate Care Hospice for providing physical and spiritual comfort to him during his last days and for supporting us throughout this journey.
John's funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 21st in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 20th in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held in Central Cemetery in Millbury. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472, The Michael J.
