Joseph Agurkis

MILLBURY Joseph A. Agurkis, 84, of 13 Hilltop Dr., died Friday, August 20th at home, after an illness

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Eunice M. (Hicks) Agurkis; two daughters, Sharon A. Perreault of Conroe, Texas and JoAnne Agurkis of Worcester; two granddaughters, Kelli A. Perreault and Carrie Perrault and a grandson, Christopher Perreault all of Houston, Texas; a brother, Albert Agurkis of Worcester. A brother John Agurkis predeceased him. He was born in Worester, son of John and Michelina (Chestnut) Agurkis and has lived in Millbury since 1948. He attended Worcester Vocational High School.

Mr. Agurkis was employed by Kenmore Transportation of Worcester for 31 years, retiring in 1984. He previously worked at Wyman-Gordon Co. in Worcester before entering the Navy in 1942. He served in the Navy during WW II aboard the USS Massachusetts and was awarded the BB59 for his outstanding dedication and support for his service to the ship. He received the WW II Victory Medal, the American Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific 10 Stars, the Philippine Liberation 2 Stars, and the European African medal. He was a member of the Lithuanian War Veterans and also served on their executive board and was a member of Maronis Park. He was a 4th degree knight of the Bishop OTM)Reilly Assembly #88 Knights of Columbus, a member of the Quinsigamond American Legion Post #381, the USS Massachusetts Association, and the teamsters Local #170 Retirees. He was a trustee of the Local #170 Teamsters Union and also served on the executive board of the retirees, until he resigned due to illness.

Joe enjoyed sports and was an avid Red Sox fan. He loved Cape Cod where enjoyed many summer activities with his family.

His funeral Mass was will be held Aug. 24th at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St., Worcester. Burial will private in Central Cemetery, Millbury. There are no calling hours.
