Joyce Hatfield

October 15, 1938 — January 21, 2008

SUTTON - Joyce B. (Charland) Hatfield, 69, of 2 Dodge Lane, died Monday, Jan. 21st after being stricken ill at her winter residence in Florida. Her life time, loving husband, Wellesley W. Hatfield Jr. passed away April 15, 2007. They would have been celebrating their 50th Wedding anniversary this February 22, 2008.

She was born in Worcester, the youngest daughter of Roland L. Charland and Alma B. (Garry) Charland. She attended St. Joseph's School on Grafton Hill in Worcester. Growing up she was a member of St. Joseph's Church and after moving to Sutton was a member of St. Mark's Church. Shortly after marriage she lived in NC, CA, HI while her husband was in the Marine Corp during the Vietnam War. At the end of the war, returned to MA and purchased a home in Sutton. She was a life long resident of Sutton who recently enjoyed her winter residence in Zephyrhills, FL.

During the years, she worked as a cook at the Blue Jay Restaurant in Sutton and Squire White’s in Worcester, a package handler at nights for UPS in Shrewsbury, and many years as a server for her brother's establishment, The French Connection, on Grafton St. Worcester until her semiretirement where she worked as a personal care attendant providing hospice care to terminally ill patients.

She was a member of the Teamsters Local 170 and the Women's Auxiliary Eagles Club of Worcester. She loved to cook and entertain, casual karaoke, and was an avid reader.

She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She was survived by five children, Michael W. Hatfield of Sutton, Denise R. (Hatfield) Clinton of Worcester, Wellesley W. Hatfield III of Worcester, Ruth C. (Hatfield) Colburn of Sutton and Roland L. Hatfield and wife Heidi Hatfield of Worcester; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her brother Gary P. Charland and survived by two sisters, Rochelle (Charland) Barry of Worcester and Dolores (Charland) Zinkevich of Worcester; two brothers, Michael Charland of Worcester and Roland Charland of Worcester; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Joyce (memere) consistently gave of herself through out the family and anyone else in need. She had an enormous heart of gold and was the perfect embodiment of altruism. In semi-retirement, this led her to choose a career in the hospice field caring for those in their time of demise. In keeping with her legacy, the family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in her name either to their favorite charity, local visiting nurses or hospice association.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday Jan. 28th in St. Joseph Church, 35 Hamilton St., Worcester. Calling hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27th in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury. Burial will be private in Howard Cemetery, Sutton.
