WEBSTER –The family of Leo Paul Gemme of Webster, suffered the loss of their beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather on November 2nd, 2011 when he passed away at the Webster Manor nursing home.
He lost his wife of 65 years, Doris L. (Renaud), in June of 2010. He leaves behind his three loving children, Jerry, Patty and Ted, five grandchildren, six great grand-children and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Millbury, he was the son of E. Louis and Alma (Bourassa) Gemme along with ten brothers and sisters. He was a member of the Our Lady of the Assumption Church where he served as an altar boy.
At the outbreak of WW II he signed up for combat duty in the U.S. Navy and was part of the invasion force at Normandy, France on D-Day. His ship was sunk as it approached Omaha beach and he survived in a foxhole for the next three days. He was a decorated war veteran and a very proud and patriotic American.
After the war he worked for his uncle Charlie, owner of the famous Worcester Lunch Car Mfg. Co. He later went on to become a top-flight sheet metal 'mechanic' in charge of crews building large steel structures for America's conventional and nuclear powered electric generating plants. He was also an avid fisherman and a dedicated Red Sox fan.
He will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff at Webster Manor nursing home for their special care and attention during his final times.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend his Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7th in St. Joseph's Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. in Webster. Visitation for family only will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday Nov. 7th in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury. Burial will be St. Joseph's Cemetery in Webster, with full military honors provided by the Webster-Dudley Veterans Council.
