L. Hunter Greenwood

L. Hunter Greenwood, of Millbury/Sutton, MA, died peacefully at home, on December 17, 2021.

He leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Joan. He was a devoted father to two children, Heidi (Todd) of Louisville, KY and Andrew (Monica) of East Northport, NY, loving grandpa to Mitchell, Casey (Seth), Zoe, Calvin and Philip, wise-but-funny uncle and great-uncle to Ken (Leah), Melanie (Kevin), Evan, Julia, Ella, and Tyler.  He also leaves one cousin, John R. Greenwood, and many loving in-laws.

Hunter graduated St. Petersburg High School, FL in 1952, and Clark University, Worcester, MA, in 1956.  He served in the U.S. Marine Corps 1958-1961, most of his time spent in Okinawa.  There, in his spare time, he taught conversational English to locals, which he loved doing.  A proud memory for him was marching in JFK’s inaugural parade in Jan 1961. He was a “tripping” counselor for Camp Robin Hood, where he spent many wonderful summers and met his wife. He was a well-respected professional land surveyor, and ran Greenwood Land Surveyors.  As a Millbury resident, he was moderator in the Millbury First Church, where he taught Sunday school and was an active member throughout his life. He chaired the Millbury Finance Committee for a time. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid hiker into his 70s.  He grew up hiking Mt Monadnock, and hiked it often with his family, friends, dogs, or alone. He guided many groups up over the years, as he knew the trails and landmarks exceptionally well.  He also loved hiking the “4,000-footers” in New Hampshire.  He loved geography and history, admired Winston Churchill, and kept the following quote in his wallet: “A 20-year-old who isn’t a liberal doesn’t have a heart, and any 40-year-old who isn’t a conservative doesn’t have a brain.”

Hunter was deeply loved and much admired by his family & friends. He left a big impression on the lives of those around him, including students, colleagues & neighbors.  His generous heart, wise words and deep appreciation of nature in all its forms will stay with us all.

Hunter’s Memorial Service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Millbury, 148 W. Main Street in Millbury on Saturday, Jan 8, at 11:00 am.
