SUTTON – Louise C. (Gibson) Grundstrom , 86, formerly of Sutton, died on Monday, October 18, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, Ct. She leaves a daughter and her husband, Kristine and Stephen Smith of New Lebanon, NY; a son and his wife, John and Susan Grundstrom of Somers, CT and a step son Kevin Grundstrom of Worcester; four grandchildren, Kimberly Harrington of Shrewsbury, Joseph Harkins, III of Westborough, David Harkins of Worcester and Madelyn Grundstrom of Willington, CT; three great grandchildren, Ashleigh Harrington, Amber Harrington and Paul Harrington, all of Shrewsbury. She also leaves two brothers, Douglas Gibson and his wife, Barbara, of Sudbury and Robert Gibson and his wife, Connie, of Union, CT and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Edward Grundstrom died in 1997. She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard M. Gibson and Donald L. Gibson.
She was born in Worcester on January 15, 1924, the daughter of Edward M. and Alice M. (Corkum) Gibson. Her mother died at the age of 39 years and left Louise, then 17 years old, to support, care for and raise her four younger brothers while holding down a 44 hour per week job. She graduated from the former Commerce High School in 1942 and attended Worcester Junior College. She worked at George F. Blake Company as a bookkeeper for many years until her marriage to Edward Grundstrom in 1949. After courting for 3 months, they were married for 48 years. They lived and raised their family on Boston Road in Sutton. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Sutton and taught Sunday School when her children were young. Louise was a selfless person, always helping those in need, sacrificing and placing herself last in priority. She loved everyone. As a Big Band era enthusiast and an elite dancer, she and her husband Edward, a WWII Army veteran and semi-professional boxing champion, met the great band leader Guy Lombardo in Worcester in 1950, receiving his autograph on their wedding picture. One of her best friends, a younger brother Richard, was killed at age 18 during WWII, having a square in Worcester named after him for his heroics during the amphibious landings in the English Channel. Louise enjoyed the ocean (especially Rockport and Cape Cod), sewing, knitting, music and sacrificing for her family and anyone else in need. We miss you mom! The world will never be the same without you, but now you're in heaven with Dad and the others you have made so happy.
