SOUTH YARMOUTH MILLBURY – Maurice J. O'Brien, 85, of South Yarmouth, formerly of Millbury, died Friday, Feb. 20th in the Cape Cod Hospital.
His wife, Ann C. (Dyer) O'Brien died in 1987. He leaves a daughter, Ann C. wife of Charles J. Kach of Worcester; a son Daniel P. O'Brien and his wife, Elizabeth of Ridgefield, CT; a daughter-in-law, Mary O'Brien of Millbury; a sister, Ann Hester of Holden; eleven grandchildren, Brendan, Ann and Kathleen Kach, Colin, Terence, Conor, Reaghan, and Devin O'Brien, Nora, Kevin and Eileen O'Brien; one great-granddaughter, Ann Lewandowski; a long time friend and companion, Marcia Fraser; nephews and nieces. He was born in Amsterdam, NY and is predeceased by his parents, Maurice W. and Helen E. (Connor) O'Brien, a son, Maurice J. O'Brien Jr. and two brothers, Tom and John O'Brien He graduated from Millbury High School in 1941 where was the class President and a three sport Athlete.
Mr. O'Brien was Postmaster of the Millbury Post Office where he served for over 30 years. He served during WW II in the Army Air Force flying 50 missions in a B-24 over Africa and Europe. He received the Purple Heart and Air Medal with four leaf clusters. He was a former Millbury Town Treasurer for 20 years and a member and president of the former St. Brigid Men's Club. Maurice was a former chairman of the Millbury March of Dimes and a member of the Millbury Finance Committee. He attended the Millbury Old Timers Banquet and received their Man of Distinction award in 1995. He was a member of the Charles F. Minney Post VFW in Millbury and the Moose Lodge in South Yarmouth.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25th from the Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Brigid Church, 59 Main St. in Millbury. Burial will be in St. Brigid Cemetery in Millbury. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24th in the funeral home.
