Michael Ackerman

April 13, 1955 — March 22, 2011

SUTTON – Michael Thomas Ackerman, 55, of Sutton, passed away March 22, 2011. He leaves his wife of 31 years, Joy (Whiteley) Ackerman, and two daughters, Rachel Ackerman of Sutton and Mary Ackerman of Ithaca, NY. He is also survived by his mother, Gladys (Stoudt) Ackerman and brothers, Pat Ackerman and Robert Ackerman, of Bethlehem, PA.

Mike grew up in Hellertown, PA, where he graduated from Saucon Valley High School in 1973. He attended Bucknell University, graduating in 1977, and earned an M.S. in civil engineering from the University of Lowell. He was employed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection from 1979 until his death, and consulted in the field of wastewater operations training and microbiological analysis. Mike was a past president of the Massachusetts Water Pollution Control Association, and received several professional awards for his work on behalf of operator certification training. He was an amateur naturalist, and avid gardener, former co-chair of the Sutton Conservation Commission, and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sutton.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 3 Pleasant St. in Sutton on May 7, 2011 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Massachusetts Audubon Society, 208 South Great Road, Lincoln, MA, 01773; or to St. John's food pantry (St. John's Church, attn: Community Cupboard), 3 Pleasant St., Sutton, MA 01590-0496.
