Pauline Maccollom

March 7, 1923 — December 19, 2008

MILBRIDGE, ME - Pauline Wetherbee MacCollom, 85, of Milbridge, Maine, died December 19 in West Sutton, MA, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry T.W. Wetherbee and Helen (Boothby) Wetherbee Parker, her husband, Welby F. MacCollom and her step-son, Andrew Welby MacCollom.
She is survived by her step-daughter, Margaret A. McGee of Akron, Ohio and a step daughter-in-law, Beverly E. MacCollom of West Sutton, MA, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and devoted companion, Tom Motte of North Carver, MA.

She was raised in Bolton, MA, later moving to Brockton, MA where she graduated from Brockton High School. Polly graduated from Boston University in 1954 and earned a Masters in Education from BU in 1958. She was a beloved teacher at the Dexter School in Brookline, MA and taught there from 1946-1967.

Her marriage to Welby MacCollom in 1967 led to many happy years in Sterling, MA. She was active in The First Church in Sterling and the Historical Society. They moved to Milbridge, Maine in 1985 where they restored a century old house. Polly was an avid collector of teddy bears, enjoyed gardening, quilting, traveling and had a special place in her heart for the dogs that were lucky enough to be her pets through the years. In Milbridge she enjoyed her many friends, neighbors, volunteering with the Milbridge Historical Society, being an active member of the Milbridge Congregational Church and faithfully visiting the Narraguagus Bay Health Care Facility.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 3 at 11 a.m. in The First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, Sterling. A private burial will take place at the Hillside Cemetery in Sterling. At Polly's request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West - 6th Floor, Brookline MA 02445-7226, attention Contribution Services or to The Ark Animal Shelter, P.O. Box Box 276 Cherryfield, Maine 04622.
