d. April 12, 2017

SUTTON - Penelope S. (Smith) Nunnemacher, 70, of Sutton, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 12, at St. Camillus Health Center of Northbridge.

Penny leaves her husband Robert (Knick) of Sutton, a son, Jacob and his wife Jennifer and three granddaughters of Sutton, a son, Joshua and his wife Sarah and a grandson and granddaughter of West Boylston and a son, Jesse and his wife Nicole of Sutton. She is survived by a brother, Richard Smith and his wife Anne, a brother, Kenneth Smith and his wife Deborah and a sister, Bonnie Fecowicz and her husband Richard and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was born in Worcester, Mass as the daughter of Emil B. and Eugenia M. Smith and moved to Sutton in 1957. Penny graduated from Sutton High School and then from the David Hale Fanning Trade Vocational School as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked part time at the Beaumont Nursing Home of Northbridge and the Keith Hill Nursing Home of Grafton before working full time at and then retiring from the Westborough State Hospital after 20 years.

Penny was a very gregarious person with a quick, full smile and an easy laugh. She, along with her mother, were passionate bargain hunters at a wide variety of stores far and wide in the county. She had time to attend painting, sewing and basket weaving classes. Penny liked to cook a variety of meals and could quickly make desserts such as a bang-bang cake or cherry squares without a recipe. Vaillancourt Folk Art of Sutton was a frequent stop in her travels and she especially looked forward to the yearly special sale where she and other devotees would spend the night there to get first choices. Holiday decorating and family meals at Easter and Thanksgiving were always eagerly anticipated although much of her interest and effort went into Christmas decorating, meals and presents. Above all, Penny relished time spent with her miniature dachshunds, friends, family and especially her grandchildren.

She travelled with friends or family to Poland, Ireland, Bermuda, Alaska, Wisconsin and Florida. The family wishes to express their gratitude and thanks to her numerous friends and classmates who provided extraordinary companionship, care and comfort for the duration of her stay at St Camillus. The day to day work of the staff at St Camillus with Penny also was exemplary.

Penny's calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 19th from 5 to 7 pm at Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 North Main Street in Millbury. Following a gathering at the funeral home at noon on Thursday, April 20th, burial will be in the West Sutton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Camillus Activity Fund, 447 Hill St., Whitinsville, MA 01588.
