MILLBURY- Philip J. Day Sr., 76, of20 Rindge St., died Friday at the home of his granddaughter and caregiver, Lauralee Divris, after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Mary A. (Berthiaume) Day. He leaves three children. Philip J. Day Jr., Mary A. Piscitelli, and Kenneth P. Day Sr. all of Mill bury; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; his extended family, Wallace T. and Rita S. Landry, Armand R. and Ann Marie Daigneault, Kenneth 1. and Beverly J. Schold, and Earl E. Berthiaume, who predeceased him; nephews and nieces. He was born in North Adams, son of John A. and Minnie E. (Beals) Day and has lived in Millbury most of his life.

Mr. Day owned and operated Day's Used Auto Parts for 50 years. He was a Captain on the Millbury Fire Department until he was injured on duty and retired in 1970. He was cited by the Millbury Fire Dept. for saving over 16 lives in the 16 years on the fire department, before an accident rendered him disabled when he fell 40 feet from a Mass. Turnpike bridge in 1970. He was Civil Defense Director and a Special Police Officer for the Town of Millbury. He was Deputy Sheriff in Worcester County. He was actively involved in town and state politics. He was acclaimed a "Hero" by the Town of Mill bury and a week was set aside in his honor. He received many awards and citations from various organizations including The Howard Pyle Meritorious Achievement Award, American Red Cross, Mass. State Senate, Mass. House of Representatives, and was the first person to receive the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from the Millbury Lions' Club. He was an avid hunter and a member of the Millbury Old Timer's, a former member of the Worcester County Sheriff s Assoc., and Singletary Rod & Gun Club.

His funeral will be held Tuesday, March 2nd from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Brigid's Church, 59 Main St. Burial will be in Central Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 1 st in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Millbury Firefighter's Relief Assoc., IRIS Account, 126 Elm St., Millbury, Ma. 01527.
