AUBURN - Raymond J. DeRouin, 84, formerly of Southbridge, passed peacefully Saturday morning, December 27th at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home.
He leaves his wife of 35 years, Maureen F. (McGarrell) DeRouin, two sons: Richard DeRouin and his wife, Jean, of Easthampton, Deacon Michael Hafferty and his wife, Marsha, of Dudley; two daughters, Elaine Friberg and her husband, John, of Belchertown, Sharon Mattus and her husband, Robert, of Millbury; eight grandchildren, Richard DeRouin and his wife Sabrina, of Phoenix, AZ, John and Jeffrey Friberg of Belchertown, Patrick and Andrew Hafferty of Dudley, Cameron, Kailey and Colin Mattus of Millbury and one great granddaughter, Brianna Friberg of Palmer. He also leaves his sisters, Sr. Theresa DeRouin, SSJ of Framingham and Marie Boardman, of Rocky Hill, CT, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by
his brothers George and Joseph DeRouin and his grandson, Robert J. DeRouin.
Ray was born in Chicago, the son of the late Andrew J. and Maryann (St. George) DeRouin. At the age of three he moved to Southbridge and lived there most of his life, moving to Auburn 7 years ago. He graduated from the former Cole Trade in Southbridge. He served in the US Navy, aboard the USS New from1948 - 1950. He joined the US Army in 1951, serving in Germany during the reconstruction. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned home to Southbridge. He reenlisted in the Army National Guard, 2nd Battalion (Mechanized) 181st Infantry, retiring in 1990. He was employed by Pratt & Whitney of Hartford, CT for 25 years as a machinist, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Order of Redmen and the American Legion Post of Southbridge.
He was an avid pitch player, and gardener who was well-known for his delicious tomatoes. He enjoyed rooting for the Patriots and all of his grandchildrens' many sporting activities. Ray also loved being surrounded by family and especially enjoyed the gatherings at his daughter, Sharon's home.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30th from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Brigid Church, 59 Main St. in Millbury. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29th in the funeral home. Burial will be in New Notre Dame Cemetery in Southbridge.
