Raymond E. Smith "Raymie", 80, of Sutton, died at home on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 after a long wonderful life. He was surrounded at the time of his death by his loving family.
Ray was a lifelong resident of Sutton. He was the son of the late Ellery "Bucky" and Faith (Freeland) Smith. Ray graduated from Sutton High School and served in the Army from 1957 – 1963. He worked for Upton Fuel and Construction Company from 1959 until 1968 at which time he became Highway Surveyor of Sutton until his retirement in 2000. Ray was a volunteer firefighter for the Sutton Fire Department for more than 30 years and a member of the Massachusetts Highway Association. He was awarded the 2001 Citizen of the Year by the Sutton Lions Club. He enjoyed playing golf, camping trips, repairing machinery, an occasional nap and smoking his pipe. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.
Ray was a loving husband and is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gretel (Putnam) Smith of Sutton. He was the son-in-law of Albertine Putnam; devoted father to his three children, Peter Smith and his wife Robin of Mendon, Patricia Couture and her husband James of Oxford, and Dr. Thomas Smith and his husband William Glazer of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Ray was a cherished grandfather to nine; Dr. Nicole (Wagner) Rigatti and her husband Marc, Kristen and Jennifer Wagner, James Couture Jr., Melissa and Krista Smith, Jacob, Joscelyn, and Justin Phipps; great grandfather of Olivia Hammond and Riley West. Ray leaves three siblings; Stephen Smith and wife Kristine, Andrew Smith and wife Joan and Hope Stockhaus and husband Richard; a sister-in-law, Barbara Smith; many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a brother, Harold Smith.
Ray's calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 2nd in Mulhane Funeral Home, 45 Main Street in Millbury.
His funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3rd in the First Congregational Church of Sutton, 307 Boston Road in Sutton. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Howard Cemetery in Sutton.
