SOUTH YARMOUTH - Richard W. "Bill" Johnson, 89, formerly of Worcester, died Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, after being stricken ill after delivering Meals on Wheels, which is a way he donated his time for the South Yarmouth Senior Center.
He leaves his wife of 63 years and the love of his life, June A. (Carlstrom) Johnson; a son, Robert Johnson and his wife, Pamela of Sutton; a daughter, Carol Johnson of Boston; three grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson of Watertown, Kristina Spilman and her husband Zachary of Sherborn and Jeffrey Johnson of Philadelphia; two great grandsons, Daniel and Jacob; two sisters, Barbara Stidsen and her husband Henry of Paxton and Lois Yngve of North Attleboro; two brothers in laws, Edwin Carlstrom of Arizona and Taylor Donnelly of Millbury; several cousins, nieces and nephews and many good friends. He was born and raised in Worcester and is predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Olga (Wilhelmson) Johnson and an infant daughter, Linda and an infant son, Richard.
He operated the corner store, Elmer & Bill's Variety Store in Worcester for his entire working life, first with his father Elmer and then later with his wife June. He was a Navy veteran during WW II. He graduated from Commerce High School and then from Becker Jr. College, both in Worcester. He was an avid fisherman his entire life and did so in retirement on Cape Cod. A typical New England sports fan, following the Red Sox and Patriots.
Calling hours are Thursday March 16th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mulhane Home for Funerals 45 N. Main St. Millbury. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 17th in the funeral home and burial with military honors will be in West Millbury Cemetery in Millbury. In lieu flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 300 5th Ave. Waltham, MA 02451.
