February 16, 1939 – August 14, 2024

Richard Elwood Peltier passed away in Worcester, Massachusetts on August 14, 2024 with his family by his side, following a period of declining health. He was 85.

Born to Jennie Schomber and Albert Peltier, Richard was born and raised in College Point, Queens, New York. He graduated from Flushing High School in 1956 and earned a degree in economics from Queens College.

Richard married the love of his life, Linda Kohlroser, in 1964 and together they raised sons Steven and Edward. Richard was very active in the boys’ activities and served as a leader, coach, or official for Cub Scouts, Little League, and youth basketball leagues. He was immensely proud of the academic, athletic, and professional accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.

Richard enlisted in the Army in 1957 and completed coursework in general drafting at the US Army Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Richard had a varied and interesting career: he pursued an entrepreneurial inclination as a local purveyor for Boar’s Head and owner of a wine and liquor store on Long Island; went back to school mid-career to study radiation therapy and worked in hospitals in New York and New Jersey; and ultimately retired from working on Wall Street, where he was a compliance examiner for the National Association of Securities Dealers (now FINRA).

Richard and Linda loved to travel and made many trips to Europe, the Caribbean, and various locations in the US. In retirement, Richard found enjoyment in reading fiction and military history, watching classic movies, and volunteering with the Brookhaven-Islip chapter of AARP and Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Setauket, NY. He could frequently be found doing Linda’s bidding in the gardens that gave them both so much joy.

Preceded in death by his beloved Linda, Richard is survived by sons Steven (Carol) and Edward (Kaye); grandchildren Nicholas and Jeanette Peltier; cousin Jane Wick; brothers-in-law Rudy (Mary) Kohlroser and Gary York.

At Richard’s request, interment services will be private. In lieu of flowers, friends may choose to remember Richard through donations to the Poppenhusen Institute (114-04 14th Road, College Point, NY 11356; www.poppenhuseninstitute.org
