MILLBURY - Richard “Sam” Sampson, passed away unexpectedly at home on November 29th 2022.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Sampson; daughter Susan and her husband Paul Mathieu of Paxton, sons Michael Sampson and his wife Lisa of Auburn, and William Sampson and his wife Tracy of Middleton; Grandchildren Mike, Morgan, Abby, Jacqueline, Sammy, Shannon, Michaela, and Dylan. Sam is predeceased by his wife, Joyce Sampson in 1991.
He was born and raised in Main South, Worcester and was an All-Star football and baseball player at South High School. Sam was a Vietnam Era Air Force Veteran stationed in Japan and a Main South American Legion Post 341 life member. He was also a proud member of the United SteelWorkers of America Union, AFL-CIO at the Worcester and Concord Wire Companies. He was a cofounder of the Worcester Vikings Pop Warner Football Organization and coached numerous Ty Cobb baseball teams in the 1970s and 80s. Sam was an avid sports fan and was passionate about going to Holy Cross basketball and football games with his grandsons, Mike and Dylan.
He cherished the time he spent in his winter home in Boca Raton, Florida as well as traveling. Above all else, his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and enjoying the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. We will always carry his memory in our hearts.
Family and friends are invited to remember and celebrate Sam’s life by gathering on Saturday, Dec. 3rd from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Mulhane Funeral Home, 45 N. Main Street in Millbury.
His Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. in St. Brigid Church, 59 N. Main Street in Millbury. Burial will be private.
