Robert C Giannette, 60, also known as Bob or ‘Zakk,' passed away earlier this Sunday, February 9, at UMass Memorial Medical Center. He was surrounded by family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Bob defied all odds after his initial diagnosis in June 2023, when he learned he had Stage 4 cancer and an estimated one month to live. Instead, through sheer force of will and unyielding love for his family, he thrived for nearly two years.
Bob lived a life of both celebration and purpose. His outsized personality and love of music led him to a high-profile role as a disc jockey on Boston’s renowned rock station WAAF, where he lit up the airways with his instantly recognizable voice. While his colorful sense of humor filled any room, Bob also spoke up for what he believed in: he created Bikers Against Abusing Kids (B.A.A.K), an international network to support abused children and their families. Known as ‘Rocker’ in this capacity, he was a singular force in helping those in urgent need. This was reflected most prominently in his work as a Millbury firefighter, a lifelong dream he pursued with dedication and honor.
As an independent contractor, Bob brought a fierce work ethic and insistence on craftsmanship. He also embraced a wide range of interests, such as perfecting the world's finest meatballs on weekends, filling the air with notes of his proud Italian heritage.
Never one to withhold his thoughts, Bob brought uncommon honesty -- always with a heart of generosity and thoughtfulness. He gave freely of himself whether through his time, talents or presence, and those who knew him are forever touched by his kindness. Above all, he cherished his family, weaving his love into every aspect of his life.
Bob leaves his wife and cherished partner of 22 years, Karen (Sirois) Giannette, and his five beloved children: Krystal, Belle, Mindy, Gianna and Bobby. He was the son of the late Robert P. Giannette.
His family would like to thank Dr. Jon Wischhusen, nurse Michelle Tucker, and his entire team at Dana Farber in Foxboro for the incredible care and kindness he received.
Services for Bob will be held on Saturday, February 15th with visitation from 2 - 4pm, immediately followed by a service at Mulhane Home for Funerals, located at 45 North Main Street in Millbury, MA 01527.
You fought so bravely, Zakk. May the music you shared, and the love you created with Karen and your children, echo through all our lives.
