SUTTON Robert L. Stockwell, 82, passed away at home, surrounded by family and friends, on Tuesday, October 11th.
Robert leaves his wife of 61 years, Betty (Braman) Stockwell; a sister, Jerilyn Stead, wife of Ronald of Millbury, two children, Jody Stockwell-Jerszyk and her husband, Robert Sr. of Millbury and Jay Stockwell and his wife Charlene, of Sutton, his loving granddaughter Noelle Stockwell of Sutton, and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester and is pre-deceased by his parents, Laurence F. and Alice G. (Gould) Stockwell, and a son, Jonathon Stockwell.
Robert was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Millbury and volunteered countless hours with Christmas decorations and electrical service for the church. He spent several years correcting the time on the steeple clocks at the church, and often climbed the stairs to the top, even after the loss of a leg in an accident. Robert served on several committees and boards at the church, including the Handicap Access. Robert was a Licensed Electrician for his fatherTM)s business, L.F. Stockwell and Son, until his fatherTM)s retirement. He later worked 25 years at Presmet Corp. in Worcester as Plant Engineer until his own retirement, and was the owner/operator of Stockwell Testing Laboratory Inc., until the sale of the company in 2003.
He was a wonderful man. He lost a leg many years ago, and never complained about losing it. He continued working and learned to do things in a different way. He was often called to speak to other amputees, assuring them that his quality of life was much the same. He golfed, sailed, and did everything just as before. Robert was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Masons in Millbury with over 50 years of membership. Robert was also a member of the West Millbury Cemetery Commission. He will be missed.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at the UMASS Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, 3ICU, and special thanks to the UMASS Memorial Hospice.
His Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct 15th in the First Congregational Church, 148 West Main St. in Millbury. There are no calling hours and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Congregational Church of Millbury Memorial Fund, 148 West Main Street, Millbury, MA. 01527.
