Ruth Chiras

November 18, 1909 — July 4, 2010

MILLBURY/WORCESTER- Mrs. Ruth Virginia (Walker) Chiras, formerly of Worcester, a resident of Millbury Health Care Center passed away peacefully on Sunday July 4, 2010. She celebrated her centennial birthday on November 18, 2009. Mrs. Chiras was the wife of John J. Chiras, her beloved husband, who died in 1963. She is survived by her daughter, Janice, the wife of Lawrence LaCasse of Wilmington, and her son, Jack, the husband of Carole, in Millbury; four grandchildren, Ruth, Jim, Stefanie and John; two great-grandchildren, Annabella and Jake; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers, Hazel, Myrtle, Jessie, Bill and George.

Ruth was born in Lowell where she spent her formative years and graduated from Lowell High School. She attended the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing in Boston graduating in the class of 1931. She was the oldest living graduate of that institution at the time of her death. As a registered nurse, she was employed in home health care, at the Bedford (MA) Veterans' Hospital, the Rutland (MA) Sanatorium and Worcester State Hospital from which she retired in 1976.

She became a Worcester resident at the time of her marriage in 1941 and moved to Millbury in 2004.

Ruth was a communicant of the Covenant United Methodist Church in Worcester where the congregation became her second family. She participated in many church activities including the Sunday School and in preparing church suppers. She was a warm friend to those who knew her providing thoughtful aid and counsel to those in need. She was an avid reader and spent many pleasant hours at the Worcester Public Library. She lived up to her maiden name and could frequently be seen walking through Elm and Lake Parks as well as the Worcester Airport.

She was a spiritual woman whose most beloved reference from the Holy Bible was Proverbs 31, "The Good Wife." In her life she was guided by and lived up to every expectation and promise of those verses.

Ruth's family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to the administration and staff of the Millbury Health Care Center for their professional and compassionate care in her time of need.
