Sally Stevenson died on Sunday, November 13th at home in West Sutton with her family and loved ones all around her. It was her 90th birthday. She was born in 1926 to Kate and Bartley Thornton and lived in Spiddal, County Galway until leaving Ireland for the USA when she was 19 years old.
She met Dave Stevenson at an Irish dance in Roxbury and they were married at Saint Endas in Spiddal in 1951. Together they bought the old Luther place in West Sutton and it was there that they raised ten children. It was a full life of hard work and great love as is on a family farm and country place. It was important to both Sally and Dave that strong connections be kept with the Irish side of her family. Many will remember Sally as the "pumpkin lady" growing and selling pumpkins at the farm making it possible to make a yearly trip home to Ireland. Sally was a great knitter and quilter, a member of the West Sutton Hillside Club, Sutton Quilters and St. Mark's prayer shawl group. More than anything she will be remembered for her open door, loving smile and delight in each and every person in her life.
Sally is pre-deceased by Dave, her husband, and her siblings Maureen, Peg and Padraic. She is survived by her ten children, Mary Keefe of Worcester, Matthew Stevenson of Tampa FL Mark Stevenson of Sutton, Dave Stevenson of Woodstock CT, Margaret Stevenson of Sutton, Tim Stevenson of Worcester, Brian Stevenson of Sutton, Patrick Stevenson of Sutton, James Stevenson of Sutton, and Catherine Pires of Spring City, PA. and Sally's grandchildren Joseph, Thomas, Nora, Brian, Matt, Kevin, Sarah, Quinn, Maeve, Joseph, Nolan and Desmond and numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the Atlantic.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Nov. 16th from 5 to 8 p.m.in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 N. Main St. in Millbury. A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17th at St. Mark's Church, 356 Boston Rd. in Sutton. Burial will be in West Sutton Cemetery in Sutton.
