Sharon Smith

Springfield Sharon Anne Smith, 57, of Arlington, VA, a nursing executive, died on July 24 while visiting Millbury, MA following a long bought with cancer. Born in Washington, DC, the daughter of Shelton and Virginia (Haynes) Smith, she graduated from Columbia University with a BS in Nursing in 1968 and from Boston College with an MS in Nursing in 1972. She became a Johnson and Johnson Nurse Executive Wharton Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. Sharon began her career as a staff nurse at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She later became the Supervisor of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and subsequently the Administrative Assistant, Nursing. In 1987 she became Administrative Director, Nursing and later Vice President, Nursing at the Mt. Auburn Hospital. From 1999 until 2003 she was the Vice President for Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer of the Baystate Medical Center. Well recognized in the professional community, she was active in the American Organization of Nurse Executives and as well as the Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives for which she served terms as both president and board member. She was on advisory committees for nursing programs for Regis College, Holyoke Community College and Elms College and served on several committees of the Massachusetts Hospital Association. She was ANA certified for Advanced Nursing Administration. Her honors include the Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives Mary B Conceison Award for Excellence in Nursing and the Nursing Leadership Award from the University of Massachusetts. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau. Her brother, sister-in-law and two nieces survive her. Burial will be private and a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug 27th at the Baystate Medical Center, 759 Chestnut St., Springfield.
