SUTTON - Sherman J. Bush, 86, of Sutton, went home to God, Thursday, January 31st in St. Francis Home, Worcester, after a serious illness.
He leaves his wife Dolores (DiDonna) Bush; a son, Perry Bush and his wife Debbi of Missouri City, Texas; a daughter, Sherry wife of Larry Smith of TheWoodlands, Texas; three grandchildren, Teryl wife of Anthony Booth of Austin, TX, Tommy Thomson and his wife Sharon of Capistrano Beach, CA and Jessica wife of Kurt Underwood of Bossier City, LA; two great grandsons, Weston Booth and Tyler Thomson; two brothers, Eugene Bush and his wife Miriam of Hilton Head, SC and Proctor Bush and his wife Dora of Aiken, SC; a sister, Joan Deming of West Atlantic City, NJ. He ws predeceased by five sisters, Jacqueline Scanlan. Therese Martin, Janice Molzon, Mary Jane VanBrunt and Doris "Dabsie" Bush. He also leaves many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and cousins. He was born in Newark, NJ, and is also predeceased by his parents Alan E. and Doris (Proctor) Bush.
He was educated in schools in Montclair, NJ and completed studies in Marine Engineering in what is now the US Coast Guard Academy. He served as commissioned officer in US Maritime Service during WW II in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean Theaters of Operations. Upon honorable discharge he went to work for General Motors Overseas operation and Chrysler International as a sales and marketing executive. He spend 20 year in assignments in South Africa, Hong Kong, Portugal, and England.
Mr. Bush retired to Cape Cod in 1970. He came out of retirement to become General Manager at the former Moore Motors of Hyannis. During that time he was twice elected president of the Hyannis New Car Dealer Assoc. Upon his final retirement in 1986 he devoted himself to community organizations. He was a fund raiser of Cape Cod Hospital serving as a cooperator for several years. He served as a board member of the Consumer Assistance Council and Dispute Resolution of Cape Cod, the Cape Cod Needy Fund, Hospice of Cape Cod. He was the first Executive Director of the Cape Cod Community Foundation and instrumental in it's establishment.
While living on Cape Cod he was a member of Christ the King Parish in Mashpee and the Osterville Men's Club.
In his younger years, Sherman enjoyed playing racquet ball, squash, and sailing. He loved music, reading, and crossword puzzles. Good conversation, good food and entertaining were also among his enjoyable pastimes. He also enjoyed building ship models, during his retirement.
He and Dolores moved to Sutton in 2000 to take care of his mother-in-law and to be closer to his doctors in the Boston area. He was a member of St. Mark's Church, the Dudley-Gendron American Legion Post and the Sutton Historical Society. Failing health kept him from being as active as he would have liked to be. Nonetheless he enjoyed each day and relating to family and friends.
His Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday Feb. 9th St. Mark's Church, 356 Boston Rd. in Sutton. Burial will be private in St. John's Cemetery in Worcester. There are no calling hours. Mulhane Home for Funerals, Millbury is assisting the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Cape Cod Community Foundation, 259 Willow St., Yarmouth Port, MA 02675 or St. Mark's Church, 356 Boston Rd., Sutton, MA 01590.
