EAST FALMOUTH - Stephen Beaton Jr., 96, formerly of East Falmouth and Millbury, died Friday, June 1, in the home of his granddaughter, in Harwich, after a long illness.
His wife, Evelyn H. (Pierce) Beaton died in 1996. He leaves a son Stephen Beaton III of Westboro; a daughter, Jacquelyn Cummins of Worcester; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Maynard son of Stephen Beaton Sr. and Lilla E. (Taylor) Beaton and lived in Millbury most of his life before moving to Cape Cod in 1968. He graduated from Millbury High School in 1923 and then graduated from Clark University in 1927. He did graduate work at Harvard University in Boston and then received his MasterTM)s Degree at Clark University in Worcester in 1946.
Mr. Beaton taught languages and coached sports at Millbury High School for 10 years and in 1937 was named principal of the Millbury Union Elementary School and the Junior High School. He held both positions until 1943, when he was appointed principal of the Millbury High School. He was appointed superintendent of Millbury Schools on June 20, 1960 and held that position until his retirement in 1968.
He was a former member of the Millbury Federated Church and was a member and past Master of the Olive Branch Lodge of Masons in Millbury. He was a past president and a member of the Worcester County Teachers Association. He was a three sport athlete at Millbury High School and a ten letterman athlete in college.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, in the Millbury Federated Church, 20 Main St., Millbury. Burial will be in private in West Millbury Cemetery, Millbury. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 4, in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Millbury Athletic Department, 12 Martin St., Millbury, Ma. 01527 or to the Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Rte 6A, Yarmouthport, Ma. 02675.
