Suzanne Brainard

November 17, 1948 — July 5, 2005

MILLBURY Suzanne L. (Benoit) Brainard, 56, of 146 Grafton St., died Tuesday, July 5th in her home, after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 32 years, Robert H. Brainard; a daughter, Kristen L. Bumpus of Medfield; her mother, Mary C. (Jacobowski) Benoit of Millbury; her mother-in-laws, Marguerite Bumpus of Carolina, R.I and Lillian Brainard of Salem, N.H.; aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. She was born in Worcester. She is predeceased by her first husband, Brian M. Bumpus, her father, Hervey L. Benoit and a brother, John Jurinsky. She graduated from St. Peters High School in 1966 and from St. Vincent Hospital School of Radiologic Technology in 1968.

Mrs. Brainard worked as an X-Ray Technologist at Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick for 17 years. She formerly worked at St. Vincent Hospital and the former Worcester Hahnemann Hospital, both in Worcester.

As a child Sue dreamed of horses. She spent many years sharing her love of horses with her daughter marking the way for a future career for her child. As time passed she began to ride more and joined the Bay State Trail Riders in 1997. Sue was an active member who volunteered to help out at rides and trail clearing sessions. She placed several times in the Hunter Pace Series and she won year end awards to demonstrate her commitment to her sport, open space and trail access.

In 2003 after winning in local hunter pace series, she was asked to join the Tan Heath Hunt. This was the fulfillment of a dream, to ride with the hounds. She was immediately
taken by the sport. She rode her trusted stead Cadbury for two full seasons winning her first year "The most active rider". She also won the New England Hunts Hunter Pace Series representing Tan Heath Hunts.

In December of 2004 she was honored by receiving "colors" which is only given to hunt members who demonstrated the best of sportsmanship and honor. She and her horse were also given recognition as the best example of a Field Hunter, again exemplifying the best of the sport. She continued to ride despite of her illness. Sitting atop her horse, one saw glimpses of her fading light continue to shine despite the battle inside.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, the Bay State Trail Riders Association, a board member of the Tan Heath Hunt Club, a member of the New England Horse and Trail Association and a former member of the Paramount Drum and Bugle Corps of Worcester.
Her funeral will be held Friday, July 8th from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St., Worcester. Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Millbury. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 7th, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Care Hospice, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608
