WORCESTER - Rev. Thomas J. Markey, 75, of the Vianney House, 222 June St,
formerly of Millbury, died Thursday, May 16, after a long illness.
He leaves a sister, Gert Griffin of Worcester; nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by a brother, Joseph B. Markey and a sister Mary P. Sawicki. He was born in Worcester, son of Joseph A. and Alice G. (Barry) Markey. He graduated from St. PeterTM)s High School and attended Holy Cross College. He also attended the House of Philosophy and the Grand Seminary both in Montreal, Canada.
Rev. Markey was ordained May 19, 1951 at St. PaulTM)s Cathedral, by Bishop Wright. He was a curate at St. AnneTM)s Church in Southboro from 1951 to 1953, at Our Lady of the Rosary in Worcester from 1953 to 1954, at St. JohnTM)s Church in Worcester in 1954, at St. Joan of Arch Church in Worcester from 1954 to 1956, at Sacred Heart Church in Gardner from 1956 to 1957 and at St. PaulTM)s Cathedral in Worcester from 1957 to 1961. He was a temporary administrant at St. PaulTM)s Cathedral in Worcester in 1961. He was an assistant at St. StephenTM)s Church in Worcester from 1965 to 1966, at St. JosephTM)s Church in Leicester from 1966 to 1968 and at St. MaryTM)s Church in Southbridge from 1968 to 1969. He was Pastor at Holy Family of Nazareth in Leominster from 1969 to 1975, at St. MaryTM)s Church in Uxbridge from 1975 to 1978 and at St. BrigidTM)s Church in Millbury from 1978 to 1999. He then was in residence, as a senior priest, at Blessed Sacrament Church since 1999.
A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 20 in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St . Burial will be in St. JohnTM)s Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 19 in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 19 in the church.
