MILLBURY – Thomas M. O'Leary, 61, of Millbury died on Saturday, July 10 after a long and valiant battle with cancer at Milford Regional Medical Center, with his loving family by his side.
He leaves his wife of 40 years, Virginia M. (Newman) O'Leary; two sons, James Patrick O'Leary of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Michael Thomas O'Leary of Paxton; his mother, Grace V. (Pescheta) O'Leary of Millbury; nieces and nephews. His father, James H. O'Leary, Sr. and his brother, James H. O'Leary, Jr. predeceased him.
Tom was a graduate of Millbury Memorial High School where he was active in football, basketball and track. He attended the University of Nevada in Reno.
He was a sergeant with the 821st Rangers, USAF, and proudly served two tours of duty in Vietnam and after his discharge was employed by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority until illness forced him to retire in 1999.
Tom loved Maine and he and Ginny always looked forward to getting away to Ogunquit each summer. He took great pleasure in raising a select breed of bantam chickens, and tending to his exotic fish; but most especially he enjoyed the companionship of his Maine Coon cat, Nick, who was with him throughout his illness. Prior to becoming ill Tom was an avid sportsman of all seasons, and was a member of the Singletary Rod & Gun Club and The 200 Club. He also held memberships with the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Nankin Club of America, the American Poultry Association, and the Dudley Gendron American Legion Post in Sutton.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 15th at Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main Street in Millbury. Tom's funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday July 16th in St. Brigid Church, 59 Main Street in Millbury, with his cousin, Father Paul Tabor of New York officiating. He will be laid to rest in Central Cemetery in Millbury.
